Q.E.D. Cleans Nuclear Aircraft Carrier

Q.E.D. Systems Inc., a marine engineering and technical services firm headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA, provides a wide range of chemical cleaning services for U.S. Navy ships using RYDLYME. This includes work on the Navy's big decks, the aircraft carriers.

One of their recent jobs was chemically cleaning the saltwater (tube) side of the main and auxiliary condensers on the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) to remove excessive scale and foreign debris. These condensers are critical equipment in the ship's main propulsion steam and electrical generating plants. Each condenser contains 8,880 tubes measuring 0.5 inches diameter and 16 feet in length. As these tubes become clogged, the operational efficiency of mission essential electronics/weapons equipment is severely degraded. If the tubes go too long without being cleaned, eventually there could be system failures and costly repairs required on equipment.   USS Enterprise (CVN 65)

In the past, condenser tubes were mechanically cleaned using a drill and high-pressure water blasting. This was a time consuming and tedious process that required the heads to be removed from the condenser, cleaned and then re-installed. Q.E.D. chemically cleaned the condensers using RYDLYME, which removed all of the scale and foreign debris without having to disassemble the condenser. After circulating the RYDLYME through the condenser tubes, Q.E.D. inspected and video taped the condition of the tubes using a boroscope. Miraculously, the tubes were found to be in "like-new" condition as a result of the RYDLYME cleaning. When high-pressure water blasting is utilized to clean these condensers, it is common to have 25% or more of the tubes with enough remaining deposits that they fail the eddy current probe test. The Enterprise had less than 2 tenths of a percent (0.2%) of the tubes fail the eddy current probe test upon completion of the RYDLYME cleaning.

By partnering with the Navy and Apex Engineering, Q.E.D. has implemented a maintenance technology that has resulted in significant savings to the government and greatly improved the operational readiness of the systems and equipment that support our nation's war-fighters.
